While visiting the gardens, you are able to walk around both indoors and outdoors. There are four fountain areas but the one to watch is the Main Fountain Garden! This fountain show is mesmerizing. What we liked most is that they are an education center for gardening. There are several programs including some for kids (K-12), internships for college students, online classes, and adult classes. Sustainability is most often associated with the environment and this place offers classes specifically regarding landscapes and gardens.
Our favorite is Sustainable Landscape and Design Theory. Now you may ask - how is sustainable gardening different? It is an organic garden taken a step further. This class teaches about “the contemporary theory of sustainable landscape design while learning alternative landscaping methods to alleviate environmental pressures caused by invasive species, storm water runoff, and habitat destruction. Study the landscape to recognize potential problems and identify solutions that will reduce the environmental impact and conserve biodiversity.”
On November 19, 2014, America voted that Longwood Gardens has the best public restroom. In the 13th annual national contest, this massive green wall and eco-friendly design truly caught the attention of Americans.
“We are so pleased to receive the America’s Best Restroom award,” said Chief Marketing Officer Marnie Conley. “Longwood Gardens is about beautiful horticulture, being a good steward to our environment, and providing an extraordinary experience for our more than one million guests each year.”
