I use Google Maps as a resource while planning trips because it is user-friendly and saves automatically to my google account.
There are two ways to plan a trip:
Saving a location to visit in the future
Mapping a trip point-by-point
Saving a location to visit in the future
Step 1: Go to Google, Sign-in to your account, and the continue to Google Maps
Step 2: Go to the top left corner and click on the 3 bars where the Menu will appear
Step 3: Click on "Your Places"
Step 4: Click on "SAVED" on the top menu
Step 5: Click on "Want to go" and start adding the locations, or alternatively you can click on "Favorites" or "Starred places". There is also the option to create your own category (ie. "Visited") by clicking the blue circle with the + sign.
The end result will look something like this every time you visit Google Maps:

Step 8: Similarly to name your Map, click on "Untitled Map" and type in the map title and description.
Remember:
To plan a new trip: click "Add layer" on the same map or make a new map from scratch starting from step 4 of How to map a trip point-by-point on Google Maps and click "CREATE MAP"
If you add more than one layer on a map, there is a check box next to your trip that you can click to make that trip hidden
You can move a destination to another layer by clicking and dragging to where you want it
You can also rearrange layers in the order you prefer by clicking and dragging it
You can "Share" this map with friends or family if you want to plan together
You can also add directions to your map using the tools under the search bar
To access your maps in the future, you follow the steps 1-3 from the Saving a location to visit in the future explanation
